How to convert M4A to MP4
M4A and MP4 are the same MPEG-4 container; the extension only says whether there is a picture inside. Apple uses .m4a for audio bought from the iTunes Store, recorded in Voice Memos or bounced from GarageBand and Logic, and none of the video platforms accept it. Converting it means giving the audio a picture: the cover held still, or a visualizer that moves with it. It happens in your browser, so the file stays on your machine.
- Drop the M4A on the page: a purchase from the iTunes Store, a Voice Memo, a GarageBand or Logic export. It is decoded on your device, and the cover inside the file, if there is one, is picked up.
- Keep Still for the cover on its own, or pick Bars, Halo, Vinyl, Film or Line for a visualizer around it. For a voice recording, Line draws the waveform.
- Type the title and the artist, or leave them off. Add a cover if the file had none. Choose 16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 1:1 for feeds.
- Choose the whole file (up to ten minutes) or a clip and press Export. The MP4 downloads with the audio as AAC.

Questions
What is the difference between M4A and MP4?+
Nothing in the container: both are MPEG-4 files. Apple names a file .m4a when it holds only audio and .mp4 when it holds video. Converting M4A to MP4 therefore means adding a picture, not changing the format of the sound.
Does the sound get encoded again?+
Yes. The AAC in the M4A is decoded and encoded again as AAC for the MP4, at a high bitrate. A second pass on a store or Voice Memo file is not something you will hear; keep the original if you want the untouched audio.
My M4A is Apple Lossless (ALAC). Does it work?+
Not in Chrome or Edge: tested, they do not decode ALAC, so the file is refused. Safari does decode it, so this page works there. Otherwise export the track as WAV or FLAC first and drop that.
Can I make a video of a Voice Memo?+
Yes. Voice Memos save as M4A. Still gives it a cover and a title; Line draws the waveform of the voice. For a podcast look with a moving waveform, the waveform video maker is the same tool with the speech styles first.
Why is the MP4 bigger than the M4A?+
Video is more data than audio. A still cover compresses well, so the MP4 stays small for a video, but it will be several times the M4A. That is the format, not a setting.
Does my file get uploaded?+
No. The file is decoded, drawn and encoded in your browser with the WebCodecs API. Nothing leaves your machine, there is no queue and no watermark.
How long can the file be?+
Up to ten minutes per export, at 1080p, free. A longer file, a full album side or a podcast episode, goes out in parts for now: set the start, export ten minutes, set the next start. Pro, which is coming, renders the whole file in one piece on our servers.
Which frame for YouTube, and which for Reels?+
16:9 for YouTube, the whole file. 9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, usually a 15, 30 or 60 second clip from the best part. 1:1 for feeds. The frame switch sits beside the player and every style has its own layout for each.
