How to convert FLAC to MP4
FLAC is the lossless format of Bandcamp downloads, CD rips and masters, and no video platform takes it. This page gives the audio a picture and encodes a video on your machine: the FLAC never uploads. The sound in the MP4 is AAC, because that is what the platforms play; keep the FLAC as the master.
- Drop the FLAC on the page: a Bandcamp download, a rip, a master. It is decoded at full resolution on your device.
- Keep Still for the cover alone, or pick Bars, Halo, Vinyl, Film or Line for a visualizer around it.
- Upload the cover (the picture inside a FLAC is not read yet) or type the title and a typographic cover is made. Choose 16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 1:1 for feeds.
- Choose the whole file (up to ten minutes) or a clip and press Export. The MP4 downloads with the audio as AAC.

Questions
Is the MP4 lossless?+
No. An MP4 for YouTube or Instagram carries AAC, which is lossy, at a high bitrate. Nothing is lost that the platform would have kept: every upload is encoded again on their side. The FLAC stays your master; the MP4 is the delivery copy.
Which browsers decode FLAC?+
Chrome and Edge, tested here, and Firefox and Safari decode FLAC natively too. Decoding happens on your device; a forty megabyte file takes a second or two.
Does a 24 bit or 96 kHz FLAC work?+
Yes. It is decoded at full resolution. A high sample rate makes no difference on the platforms, which encode every upload again.
Is the cover inside the FLAC used?+
Not yet: the embedded picture is read from MP3 and M4A files, not from FLAC. Upload the cover, or type the title and a typographic cover is made from it.
Why is the MP4 smaller than the FLAC?+
A FLAC is lossless and large; the AAC audio in the MP4 is a fraction of its size, and a still cover adds little video data. For a lossless album of a few hundred megabytes the MP4 is a few tens of megabytes.
Does my file get uploaded?+
No. The file is decoded, drawn and encoded in your browser with the WebCodecs API. Nothing leaves your machine, there is no queue and no watermark.
How long can the file be?+
Up to ten minutes per export, at 1080p, free. A longer file, a full album side or a podcast episode, goes out in parts for now: set the start, export ten minutes, set the next start. Pro, which is coming, renders the whole file in one piece on our servers.
Which frame for YouTube, and which for Reels?+
16:9 for YouTube, the whole file. 9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, usually a 15, 30 or 60 second clip from the best part. 1:1 for feeds. The frame switch sits beside the player and every style has its own layout for each.
