Extract audio from video.
The sound of any video as its own file: MP3 to play anywhere, WAV to edit, or M4A with the original sound copied out untouched. Drop one video or a folder of them. Only the sound is read, so long videos take seconds. Done on your own machine.
01 Files
MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, as many and as long as you like. Only the sound is read, the picture is never decoded, and nothing uploads.
02 Convert to
AAC in an MPEG-4 file. Sound that is already AAC (most MP4 and MOV videos, iPhone recordings, M4As) is copied as it is: no second encode, near instant. Anything else is encoded at 192 kbps. Each file downloads as it finishes.
The sound, then a new picture
Took the song out of a video? It can have a new picture of its own. Above, a frame from our music visualizer, which turns the extracted sound into a video that moves with it; for a talk or a podcast, the waveform video maker draws the voice.
Formats
| MP4, M4V | Sound usually AAC: copied into M4A untouched, or made into MP3 or WAV. |
|---|---|
| MOV | iPhone, QuickTime and camera clips. Sound usually AAC, the same as MP4. |
| WebM | Browser and screen recordings. Sound is Opus or Vorbis, so M4A means an AAC encode. |
| MKV | Read the same way; the sound codec inside decides what can be copied. |
| No sound track | Flagged as soon as the file is read; the rest of the batch carries on. |
How to extract audio from a video
A video file is a picture track and a sound track side by side, and extracting the audio means taking the sound track out on its own. When the sound is AAC, as it is in almost every MP4 and MOV, it can be copied out as an M4A without being touched: nothing lost, done in a moment. MP3 and WAV need the sound decoded and written again, which takes seconds a minute. Either way the picture is never decoded, the video is read a piece at a time so its size does not matter, and nothing uploads.
- Drop the videos anywhere on the page, or click to choose them: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, mixed freely. Each shows its sound codec, sample rate and length at once. No video to hand? Try the sample.
- Pick M4A to copy the original sound out untouched, MP3 (128, 192 or 320 kbps) for a file every device plays, or WAV for an editor.
- Press Convert. The videos go one after another, each with its own progress line, and each sound file downloads under the video's name as soon as it is done.

Questions
M4A, MP3 or WAV: which should I pick?+
M4A when you want the sound exactly as it is in the video: it is copied, not re-encoded, so nothing is lost and a twenty minute video takes half a second. MP3 when the file has to play on anything, including old players, car stereos and upload forms that list only MP3. WAV when it is going into an editor, a DAW or a transcription tool that wants uncompressed audio.
Which video formats work?+
MP4, MOV and M4V (sound usually AAC), WebM (Opus or Vorbis) and MKV, tested in Chrome. A WebM or MKV with Opus has no AAC to copy, so M4A means an AAC encode at 192 kbps there. A video without a sound track is flagged as soon as it is read.
How long does it take?+
Measured in Chrome on a laptop with a twenty minute, 720p MP4 of 224 MB: M4A in half a second, WAV in 11 seconds, a 192 kbps MP3 in 17. The picture is skipped, so a 4K video takes about as long as a 720p one of the same length.
Can it extract audio from a YouTube or TikTok link?+
No. It works on video files you have, on your computer or phone; it does not download from YouTube, TikTok or any other site. If you have the right to a video and the file is on your device, drop it here.
What if a video has more than one sound track?+
The main one is extracted, the track a player would start with. Most videos have only one. A second language or commentary track is not offered yet.
Is my audio uploaded?+
No. Each file is decoded and encoded in your browser, a piece at a time, and the download is made there. Nothing leaves your machine, nothing is watermarked, and there is no queue. The page only counts that a file was converted, with the formats, never a name or the audio.
Which encoder makes the MP3?+
LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder most audio software uses, compiled to run in the browser. The MP3 is constant bitrate at the source's sample rate (48 kHz for anything above), with an ID3v2 tag.
