MP4 to MP3.

The sound of a video as an MP3: a recorded lecture, a concert clip, a screen recording, a music video you made. Drop one MP4 or a folder of them. Only the sound is read, so even a long video converts in seconds. Converted on your own machine.

01 Files

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, as many and as long as you like. Only the sound is read, the picture is never decoded, and nothing uploads.

02 Convert to

192 kbps is transparent for most music; 320 if it is going back into an editor; 128 is plenty for speech. Title, artist, album and cover are carried over. Each file downloads as it finishes.

Took the song out of a video? It can have a new picture of its own. Above, a frame from our music visualizer, which turns the converted file into a video that moves with it. For a cover held still with the sound, use MP3 to MP4; for a voice recording, the waveform video maker.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

An MP4 holds a picture track and a sound track side by side. Converting to MP3 reads the sound track out, decodes it and encodes it again with LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder. The picture is never decoded, which is why a twenty minute video takes seconds rather than minutes, and the file is read a piece at a time, so a video of several gigabytes is fine. Nothing uploads, so a private recording stays on your machine.

  1. Drop the MP4 files anywhere on the page, or click to choose them, one or a whole folder. Each shows its format, sample rate and length at once. No file to hand? Try the sample.
  2. Keep MP3 and pick the bitrate: 192 kbps for music, 128 for a talk or a lecture. Or pick M4A to keep the video's own sound as it is.
  3. Press Convert. The files go one after another, each with its own progress line, and each MP3 downloads under the original name as soon as it is done.

Questions

How long does a long video take?+

Measured in Chrome on a laptop with a twenty minute, 720p MP4 of 224 MB: a 192 kbps MP3 of 27.5 MB in 17 seconds, a WAV in 11, an M4A in half a second. The picture is skipped, so the size and resolution of the video barely matter; the length of the sound does.

Is there a way to keep the original sound?+

Yes: pick M4A. Most MP4s carry their sound as AAC, and M4A is the audio-only form of the same file, so the sound is copied out exactly as it is, with no second encode and nothing lost, in a fraction of a second. iPhones, Macs, Android phones and most players play M4A. Pick MP3 instead for an old player, a car stereo or a form that only takes MP3.

Which bitrate should I pick?+

192 kbps for music, 128 for speech. The sound in most videos is AAC at a moderate bitrate already, so a higher MP3 bitrate makes a bigger file without bringing back anything the video's own encoder dropped.

Can I convert a YouTube or TikTok video?+

Only a file you have. This page converts MP4s on your device; it does not download anything from YouTube, TikTok or any other site. If you have the right to the video and the file is on your computer or phone, drop it here.

What if the video has no sound?+

The row says so as soon as the file is read, and that file is skipped; the rest of the batch still converts. Screen recordings made without the microphone on are the usual case.

Is my audio uploaded?+

No. Each file is decoded and encoded in your browser, a piece at a time, and the download is made there. Nothing leaves your machine, nothing is watermarked, and there is no queue. The page only counts that a file was converted, with the formats, never a name or the audio.

Which encoder makes the MP3?+

LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder most audio software uses, compiled to run in the browser. The MP3 is constant bitrate at the source's sample rate (48 kHz for anything above), with an ID3v2 tag.
