MP4 to WAV.

The sound of a video as a WAV that any editor, DAW or transcription tool opens: 16-bit PCM at the video's own sample rate, usually 48 kHz. Drop one MP4 or many. Only the sound is read. Converted on your own machine.

01 Files

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, as many and as long as you like. Only the sound is read, the picture is never decoded, and nothing uploads.

02 Convert to

Lossless PCM at the file's own sample rate: 24-bit sources stay 24-bit, everything else is 16-bit. Each file downloads as it finishes.

Took the song out of a video? It can have a new picture of its own. Above, a frame from our music visualizer, which turns the converted file into a video that moves with it. For a cover held still with the sound, use WAV to MP4; for a voice recording, the waveform video maker.

How to convert MP4 to WAV

A video's sound is compressed, usually AAC, and audio software wants it uncompressed: a DAW for a remix or a podcast edit, a noise remover, a transcription service, a sampler. Converting to WAV reads the sound track out of the MP4, decodes it and writes the samples as PCM. The picture is never decoded and the file never uploads.

  1. Drop the MP4 files anywhere on the page, or click to choose them, one or a whole folder. Each shows its format, sample rate and length at once. No file to hand? Try the sample.
  2. Keep WAV. It is written at the sound's own sample rate, usually 48 kHz for video, so nothing is resampled.
  3. Press Convert. The files go one after another, each with its own progress line, and each WAV downloads under the original name as soon as it is done.

Questions

How big is the WAV?+

About 11 MB a minute for stereo at 48 kHz, the usual rate for video sound: a twenty minute video gave a 220 MB WAV. The MP4 can be smaller than its own WAV, because the WAV holds the sound uncompressed. If the file is only going to a person or a phone, MP3 or M4A is the better pick.

Will the WAV line up with the video?+

Closely: it starts where the sound track starts and keeps the video's sample rate. AAC decoders leave a few milliseconds of encoder padding at the start; on our test files the offset was under 11 ms, a third of a frame at 30 fps. In an editor, line it up by the waveform if you need it sample exact.

Does it lose quality?+

No, and it gains none: the WAV holds exactly what the video's sound decodes to. What it gives you is a file you can edit and save as many times as you like without another lossy pass.

Can I get the original sound without converting?+

Pick M4A: the AAC sound is copied out of the MP4 as it is, with nothing changed, in a fraction of a second. Most editors open M4A too; WAV is for the ones that do not.

Is my audio uploaded?+

No. Each file is decoded and encoded in your browser, a piece at a time, and the download is made there. Nothing leaves your machine, nothing is watermarked, and there is no queue. The page only counts that a file was converted, with the formats, never a name or the audio.

How fast is it?+

Measured in Chrome on a laptop with a two minute song: WAV to a 192 kbps MP3 in about two and a half seconds, MP3 to WAV in under two. A phone is slower. Files go one at a time, so a batch takes the sum of its files.
